PSSC Committee Minutes
January 12, 2021
Amended March 16, 2021 (following approval at PSSC meeting)

Attendees: Tina Landry (Principal), Tara Glencross (Vice-Principal), Stephanie Dupuis (Northrop
Frye Teacher Representative), Mark Owen, Matthew Bradshaw, Elizabeth Blakney, Anthony
Veldstra, Mandi Lawson (Home & School), Stacie Reck
Regrets: Rebecca Robichaud (Rebecca has withdrawn from the PSSC for this year)
Current Business

1. Call to Order by Mark Owen at 6:34pm
2. Adoption of the Agenda
   • Motion to adopt the proposed agenda – Elizabeth
3. Approval of Minutes
   • Minutes from December 1, 2020 approved with the following amendments:
   i) Under the Teacher report – there is no reduction in prep time for
   teachers.
   ii) Rebecca’s last name is Robichaud
   • Motion to approve – Anthony

4. Reports:
   i) Northrop Frye Home & School Association
   Representative – Mandi Lawson
   Angela was unable to attend the meeting, so Mandi Lawson attended on behalf
   of Home & School.
   • Under $1000 dollars raised with the draw before Christmas. It was less
   that anticipated but might be due to competing fundraisers at during the
   Christmas season.
   • Currently working on the teacher wish lists. They normally spend about
   $6000 to purchase items for teachers to use in their classrooms. Ranges
   from basic supplies to games etc.
   • Hoping to do some additional online fundraisers this year.
   ii) Principal’s Report – Tina Landry
   (For additional details see Mrs. Landry’s report)
   • Update on School Improvement Plan – Monitoring Math
   Now have report card data.
   13% of students flagged at catching up – an indicator available due to
   COVID
   80% meeting or exceeding in the number strand.
   While this appears to be excellent data, when broken down by grade
   level & program student results range from 36% to 95%.
   At this point, NFS is asking: “What could we use as a benchmark to
   assess our data?” (Reliability)
   This will be an ongoing discussion with the ESS team.
   • Cultural Fair
   Each class has chosen a country for their project.
   School will be contacting parents to act as experts re: countries.
   Hoping that the “expert” input will help to reduce misrepresentation of
   people/countries.
   34 countries will be represented including Indigenous and Acadien
   cultures.
   The class projects will be shared with other classes through use of
   technology.
   • Christmas Initiative was a great success. Lots of toys, food and money.
   NFS supported 14 families from the school.
   Unneeded items were given to Birchmount School and Beaverbrook
   School.
   Other items were donated to Head Start,
   Many people benefited from the overwhelming generosity of the NFS
   community.
   • Snow in the playground. Sleds, crazy carpets, and snow brick makers
   purchased.
   • Missing student-led clubs this year due to COVID.
   As an alternative there are a couple of upcoming fun events for students:
   Grade 3-5 Hackamatack Virtual presentation – pursuing
   passions such as environmental issues, animals,
   Indigenous populations, childrens’ rights/social justice,
   compassion, peace, Black Lives Matter etc.
   K-2 Art Richard musical presentation in French. Virtual
   concert and workshop
   Questions following Principal’s report:
   1) How are students adjusting to orange phase of COVID-19?
   Students are doing quite well.
   They are wearing masks but doing well with it.
   Looking forward to the return to yellow.
   iii) Parking and Drop Off Issues
   Mark will draft a letter to DEC.
   Anthony is waiting on quotes for additional parking space.
   Tina has connected with Aubrey Kirkpatrick and he will attend next PSSC
   meeting.
   Appears to be fewer cars idling.
   Tina has investigated previous signage – maintenance recalls it and will look for it
   so that it can be reinstalled.
   Mark will carry this item forward to the next agenda.
   New Business
5. PSSC Budget
   PSSC has a small operating budget.
   Last year budget went to Welcome Sign for school
   Perhaps PSSC would consider contributing to the remainder of the sign?
   Motion: Anthony moved that the money from budget for the PSSC will be used to
   contribute to the new Welcome sign for NFS in the 2020-2021 school year.
   Seconded by Stephanie.
   Motion carried.
   The sign translations are being corrected.
   Permission was given by Brunswick Schools.
   It will be installed in the outside entry way to the school.
6. Question – Following the incident at RHS on January 6th and the subsequent security
   related school closure – are students aware of available supports ?
   Families were made aware of support from ASD-E and there were no referrals for
   assistance at NFS.
7. Next Meeting – March 16, 2021 – 18:30-19:30
   Mark will follow up with Elizabeth re: timing of the next meeting.
